When it comes to scrapping cars it has always been an expensive business. Every now and again, the price of scrap metal may be reasonably high, you might be able to take your old car to the scrap yard without being charged, but there is very little chance that you would have been paid for doing as such. Obviously, if your vehicle is not on the road anymore, it is going to be an even bigger ask to get rid of it. You will find that most companies will charge an arm and a leg to do this for you, and it is easy to fall for this. On the face of it there seems to be very few options available to you if you need to scrap a car, but if you just have a little search about online you can find some great options which won’t cost you a penny and you can even find companies who will give money to charity every time they collect a car!

This sounds too good to be true to some people, but this is a fact. The process of this is so simple too. You literally pick up the phone and call the company. Once they know where you are and what you have they then contact a registered car collecting company who will then get in touch with you to arrange a suitable time for them to collect your car. Once this has been arranged, they will come and tow your car away and take it either to a recycling centre or to a car auction if they think that there is any chance of selling the car. Whatever happens next, whatever is made in terms of money on the car will be fed back into the company, where they will donate the money of the vehicle to charity. The site even goes on to say that they will donate to charity even if nothing is made from the car! You can choose whatever charity you want when you initially talk to the company. There is a list of all the charities that you can donate to on the websites, and it includes literally hundreds of options.

If you really need to scrap your car and you don’t want to end up paying through the nose to do so then this is a great option available to you. You really should take advantage of this situation because you are not just helping yourself. You are also giving to someone else through the charity aspect of the service, and considering the whole process costs you nothing and takes no effort; you really owe it to yourself to do this for the people that it will benefit.

As the summer drags on sometimes we have to reflect on why exactly we put ourselves through the long hours, frustration, and aggravation that sometimes is involved with the sport of dirt late-model racing. To help keep our focus while on the brink of burn out, we need to remind ourselves why exactly we love doing what we do. So here is my list; my reminder; my pillar to keep me doing what I do day in and day out; this is what helps keep me focused.

First and most important on my list is the friendships I have forged through the years with other racers. ‘Racers’ is a term I use loosely all the time to regard anyone with the same addiction I have, racing. You don’t necessarily have to be a driver. Crew people, promoters, track personnel, or even fans who have taken that blood oath to the sport they love so much, can all share the title of ‘Racer’. The friendships I have forged with other racers are absolutely priceless. I have never been in the military, but I have heard it being explained the same way. After spending together so much time, good, bad and other wise, a bond grows because you have all been through it together. There’s no better friends than racers.

The second and probably the most obvious is the side by side racing. I enjoy the pure beauty of good driving. Whether it is the ultra smooth consistency that usually wins most races, or the wild seat of your pants, one heartbeat from destroying everything they own type of driver, I enjoy them all. If everyone drove the same, I would lose interest real fast. Watching a good driver display his art, fluid in motion is like listening to fine music, head phones on, a slight breeze whispering on your face. Ah….Nothing better. The thrilling lap after lap, corner after corner slide jobs; cushion pounding, smooth consistent mechanical like execution, wheel rubbing, or slicing and dicing through lapped traffic; I love it all.

The smells and sounds, that’s what it’s all about. A sweet smell of racing gas, like grape bubble gum in the air, or the rhythmic thump of eight hundred plus horse power, please no muffler; what a way to spend a summer night. Believe it or not; popcorn, the smell of heaven; a slight dusting from the track, it doesn’t matter; butter and salt, definitely a must. Dirt late-model racing and, I guess, racing in general is an incredible assault on the senses. After surviving long winter there is nothing better than the first firing of that motor in the spring. It would be hard to explain the feel, to any non race fan, what it is exactly like to hear and feel that engine roar in the spring. The first quick snap of the throttle will send chills down your spine. I’ve seen many hardened mechanics go weak in the knees when the first firing of the year takes place.

In a strange bizarre way, I miss the food after a long winter away. I know your thinking ‘You are one sick person!’, but hear me out. The flat cardboard like representation of a hamburger, slathered with ketchup, mustard, onions, and relish, will melt in your mouth like a fine steak. A smooth syrupy soda with ice, again dust is optional, will quench even the heartiest of thirst. Although, I must admit, the comforting effects of track food only hypnotizes’ me for a short time into the season. It does work its’ magic early in the year.

My list is probably different from yours; we all need our list as things get tough later into the year. I’ve been going to dirt track races for thirty plus years and probably won’t stop anytime soon. I feel as if I’m part of a fraternal order, where dues are paid in sweat, blood, and a commitment to be there every Saturday night. I love dirt late-model racing; hope to see you there.

Cars are found in every corner of Earth. They are an important source of transportation. Despite the problems they have generated during the recent decade (e.g. traffic and noise pollution), they are definitely here to stay for a long period of time. This article covers why cars are important for our lives.

Cars are a daily necessity for traveling. This is especially the case for cities with poor public transportation systems. For example, in Californian cities like Los Angeles, you will barely see any proper public transportation system. Therefore, a lot of people get a car from an early age or else they will have a very difficult time getting around. However, this does not apply to every city in the world. For example, Hong Kong has one of the best public transportation systems in the world. You can take buses, trains, subways, and even informal transports like rickshaws (although they are very hard to find nowadays). In cities like Hong Kong, there is no point in getting a car because it is so much easier and cheaper to travel by public transportation. It makes sense to get a car if you are rich but you will find out that it becomes a little redundant later on, especially with the traffic you have to face.

From a business perspective, cars are important for transportation. If you are running a manufacturing business then you will have to use a car to transport the goods around. You should try and be as eco-friendly as possible when using a car. You should also have efficient safety devices so you are protected from any possible crashes.

Just like a certain cigarette marketed to young woman with the slogan “you’ve come a long way baby” Automotive engine air filters have changed to a huge degree since the first simple cars hit the streets approximately 100 years ago.

Early automotive engines had little more than a piece of screen if that to keep contaminants out of the engine. Later, Filter cans mounted on top of carburetors containing motor oil to filter incoming air came into use. Then the modern one piece, drop in pleated paper air filter became pretty much the worldwide industry standard.

But just how important is the engines air filter? Some years ago, Federal-Mogul Corporation, one of the largest and most respected manufacturers of engine bearings and components ran some interesting tests.

These tests showed that between 80% and 90% of all the contaminants that were to be found in the engines oil came in through the engines air filter with the rest being by-products of combustion and metallic particles worn from the engines internal moving parts know as wear metals. That’s right! Most of what your engines oil filter has to deal with came in through the air filter!

Further testing showed that contaminants in the 5 to 20 micron range caused the vast majority of engine wear with larger particles either easily filtered out or too large to get into the tight critical spaces between bearings and other components. Particles smaller than 5 microns were found to contribute to wear also but to a much smaller degree.

How much ingested “dirt” does it take to wreck an engine? During testing, engineers took a 350 cu in. Chevy V-8 on a test stand. Removed it’s air cleaner assembly, brought it up to average highway operating speed and “fed it” laboratory dirt (silica soil determined to be mostly in the typical micron range that an engines encounter on highway) down the intake plenum.

At well less than a tablespoon of dirt the engine lost power. A bore scope was inserted into the engine and determined that the intake and exhaust valves were already heavily damaged. The engine was restarted and the dirt feeding continued. At just less than 2 tablespoons the engine stalled and locked up.

A subsequent teardown and examination found all internal components to be damaged. Cylinders, bearings, valves. Everything!

If you were starting to get the impression that the engines air filter is the most important filter on your vehicle, you would be right!

So lets look at what’s available in air filter media these days. The most common filter media is treated paper, often backed up with glass fiber or other synthetic materials. Depending on the manufacturer these offer varying degrees of airflow and particle removal efficiency.

The other common media is the open wetted (oiled) gauze filter. These have the advantage that they can be washed, re-oiled (usually with a special oil containing a tackifying agent) and reused. A well made one can last a long time, sometimes for the life of the vehicle.

The downside is oiled gauze filters have very poor particle efficiency, often many times worse that typical pleated paper air filters. They just don’t catch the small really damaging particles. You can see this by simply holding this type of filter up to a light. Do this and you will see literally zillions of little spots with light coming through. They do offer great airflow though. See all those holes?

Make a paper/glass media dense enough that it has relatively good particle efficiency and the airflow drops significantly. This is made even worse as the filter begins to “load” with contaminants. Oiled gauze filter media offers great airflow but just doesn’t catch the small particles that are the most damaging to an engine.

Today though a modern space age air filter material has now super-ceded even the best of the pleated paper/synthetic blended air filters. The Nano Fiber filter media!

The synthetic Nano Fiber solves all the issues of pleated paper and oiled gauze filter media’s. It has un-believable particle efficiency: 100% efficiency at only 2 microns, catching particles in that critical 5 to 20 micron range.

Nano Fiber air filters are 3 to 5 times more efficient than the best-pleated paper filters and 50 times more efficient than oiled gauze! Its Nano Fiber material also flows air like an oiled open gauze media, even when heavily loaded with contaminants for great dirt holding capacity.

Nano Fiber air filters also have the advantage that they can be cleaned and re-used several times just like the oiled gauze filter. The difference being that the Nano Fiber air filter does not require the expense of a special cleaning and re-oiling kit. The synthetic Nano Fiber has a non-stick like surface. The filter can be vacuumed off or blown off with low-pressure compressed air and used over with no messy cleaning needed.

In 2006, Amsoil Inc. makers of high-grade synthetic motor oils and lubricants introduced the world’s only line of Nano Fiber air filters for the light truck and automotive market. Amsoil offers these revolutionary air filters for most cars and light trucks.
